Managing your money

Ordering a Copy of Your Credit Report

Have the following information available when you contact a credit reporting agency:

  • Social Security number
  • Date of birth
  • Current and previous addresses
    for the last five years
  • Maiden name (if you are married and have changed your name)

Currently, you can order a copy of your credit report from one or more of the major credit reporting bureaus (Equifax, Experian or TransUnion) for a small fee. Beginning in December 2004, a special toll-free number will be established that allows you to order a free copy of your report from each of the three bureaus. This access is mandated by recent federal legislation and is planned to become available in stages throughout the country. Complete nationwide access will be available by September 2005.
